The entire valley floor is underlain by deep, water-laid sediments that amplify earthquake shaking, liquefy under the right conditions, and expand and contract with the seasonal moisture cycle.
The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused the worst documented liquefaction in Los Angeles County history in Van Nuys. The Van Nuys Hotel suffered severe structural damage. Apartment complexes collapsed. Foundations throughout the neighborhood cracked, tilted, or settled. Some of that damage was properly repaired. Much was cosmetically patched and resold. Some was never addressed.

Van Nuys was one of the most severely damaged communities in the 1994 earthquake. Three decades of property sales and cosmetic repairs have obscured much of that original damage.
